Simon became managing partner when the firm converted to a limited liability partnership in October 2008. Simon chairs the executive board and has overall responsibility for managing the firm on a day-to-day basis, working with our operations partner and head of finance. The management team is structured in such a way that both the senior partner and strategy partner continue to work closely with clients, ensuring that there is a client focus at the forefront of all that we do.

Prior to becoming managing partner, Simon was the partner in charge of our Cardiff office. He has considerable experience of advising heavy industrial and manufacturing clients on agency, valuation and rating matters. He brings a thorough understanding of the issues affecting the businesses of heavy industrialists and manufacturing companies. As a result, he provides advice which helps clients achieve their desired objectives within the right timescale.

Specific experience – heavy industry
Simon advises heavy industrial occupiers in South Wales including Alcoa Manufacturing GB, BP, Chevron, Corus, Dow Corning, Inco Europe, Murco Petroleum and Solutia. He is a specialist in the contractor’s basis of valuation (equivalent to depreciated replacement cost) which is the basis of valuation adopted for rating purposes for properties occupied by the above companies. He was heavily involved in the Lands Tribunal test case, Monsanto v Farris, relating to Solutia’s chemical works in Newport.

Alcoa Manufacturing GB – achieved a saving of £1.03m empty rates following a phased closure of its aluminium works in Swansea

BP – valuation advice in respect of the site of the former Llandarcy Refinery near Swansea in connection with the sale to St Modwen

Chevron – rating advice in respect of Pembroke Refinery

Corus – rate savings achieved for Llanwern and Port Talbot steelworks since 2000 are in excess of £47m. Advice regarding compensation following the compulsory acquisition of land in connection with the Newport Southern Distributor Road and Port Talbot Peripheral Distributor Road. Inco Europe – rating and valuation advice in respect of its nickel refinery in Swansea Valley

Murco Petroleum – advice regarding an appeal to the Lands Tribunal in respect of the rating assessment for Milford Haven Refinery. Rates saved since 2000 are in excess of £3.2m Specific experience – ports
