Stuart is a chartered town planner and partner in our Manchester planning & development team. He has more than ten years’ experience in providing commercial planning consultancy advice to private, public and voluntary sector clients on a wide range of issues. He specialises in advising developers and landowners on town planning issues, with specific interests in retail, residential and renewable energy developments.
He has a thorough knowledge of planning topics and development in the regions having spent his career advising clients throughout northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland. He prides himself on providing robust and straight forward planning advice to clients in order to enable fast and effective decision making.
Specific experience
Experience of advising on both strategic and site specific development issues with regard a variety of food and non-food retailers throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. Individual schemes range from stand-alone Tesco ‘Local’ stores to mixed-use residential and retail schemes including a superstore and non-food retail parade.
Wide ranging experience of advising house builders and developers on potential residential sites throughout the north of England. Specific instructions have ranged between five and 500 units, both through the development control process and strategic promotion through the relevant development plan procedures.
Recently involved in facilitating the development of a number of wind farm developments on the east coast involving the preparation of various supporting documents, including EIA.
Extensive experience of acting for private landowners particularly in defensive planning roles that ensure that land interests are protected and asset values retained or enhanced. Specific schemes have involved resisting proposals by UK Coal to redevelop mine complexes associated with the Selby Coalfield, a motorway service area and a shortlisted eco-town site. This role includes experience of successfully pursuing a judicial review of a number of LPA and inspector decisions.
