Client: Central Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust
The Central Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust is a major hospital complex and teaching hospital, which comprises six separate hospitals. Amongst these, the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Saint Mary’s Hospital for Women & Children are both more than 200 years old and the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is more than 190 years old.
Consequently, age and obsolescence combined with a dated site configuration have led to high overheads and challenging internal communication problems for the Trust.
At the time of our introduction to the Trust, the hospital complex attracted an annual rates liability in excess of £1.4 m, which was made up of a number of separate assessments.
The challenge for us was clear. We needed to drive the level of assessment down to the lowest possible level. We served a series of proposals to alter the rating list to protect the Trust’s position and turned our attention to agreeing a more appropriate scheme of valuation. Following a series of detailed inspections, our negotiations were successful and the Hospitals’ assessments were merged into a single reduced rateable value.
Our persistent and focused approach achieved savings of more than £1m for the Trust and we were delighted to have delivered the saving ahead of our original timetable. What’s more, the Trust now has to deal with one assessment only, which will give them the benefit of minimum hassle in the years to come.
