Client: Enterprise/ Liverpool City Council

Infrastructure maintenance services company, Enterprise plc, in conjunction with Liverpool City Council, recently set out to establish a new homeless hostel for women which challenged the traditional model of the provision homeless facilities.

In contrast to the unwelcoming institutional accommodation which only offered a place to sleep and shelter, the emphasis was on creating a welcoming secure environment, with training facilities, to support homeless women to change and improve their circumstances.

A property in the Kensington area of Liverpool was identified, and our building consultancy team were appointed to manage the refurbishment process.

The solution
Comprising two large Victorian terraced houses, the property was in a dilapidated state, in use as a hostel.

Our building surveyors prepared the feasibility study, designed the tender documentation, assessed the tenders themselves and managed the administration of the contract. It meant they developed a close relationship with key contractors to ensure best service, commercial terms and surety of services for our client.

Results
The hostel was completed in October 2007 and has set flagship standards for projects of this nature across the UK. It was completed on time and within budget for £1.2m. It gives vulnerable members of society a sense of dignity when they are at rock bottom in their lives.
