Client: Greenwich Foundation for Old Royal Naval College, National Maritime Museum and Greenwich University

Gerald Eve has advised The Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College, the National Maritime Museum and the University of Greenwich on the property matters involving their historic estates for nearly 15 years. The range of advice given on this iconic World Heritage Site illustrates the property issues faced by the custodians of our heritage.

These clients face significant conservation challenges and responsibilities, occupying properties not only on a World Heritage Site, but also Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings and ancient monuments in conservation and archaeological protection areas.

The Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College
The challenge for the Greenwich Foundation has been to find new use for historic buildings on the Old Royal Naval College and to dramatically increase public access and improve the landscape. Gerald Eve has helped formulate an estates strategy and has provided valuation and feasibility advice, negotiated rent reviews, provided planning advice and advice on disposals and lettings to help deliver these objectives.

National Maritime Museum
The challenge for the National Maritime Museum and all the other museums and galleries occupying historic and iconic buildings is to recognise their contribution to art and culture may be as important as the artefacts they house; and that both make important contributions to our heritage. Gerald Eve has assisted in these challenges by creating a property terrier as an essential reference point and by subsequently providing advice on a wide range of estate issues including formal valuations for accounts purposes, reinstatement cost valuations for fire insurance, rating, landlord and tenant (including rent reviews and the surrender and renewal of a lease), boundary disputes, planning, development and regulating property interests.

University of Greenwich
As one of its campuses, the University of Greenwich occupies world famous buildings forming part of the Old Royal Naval College, which has elevated its physical identity and presence. However, occupying such prestigious historic buildings provides a significant challenge for the function of a modern university. Gerald Eve’s experience and knowledge of these issues in the valuation of specialised buildings for rating purposes enabled us to achieve a favourable rating assessment for the University.
