Client: Quintain, Lend Lease, English Partnerships and the Anschutz Entertainment Group

If you are preparing one of the largest planning application in London since the Second World War, you are looking for advisers who can help with an understanding of the town planning process today at its most complex.

The Greenwich Peninsula application submitted jointly by Quintain, Lend Lease, English Partnerships and the Anschutz Entertainment Group proposed a total of 15 million sq ft over 200 acres, including a 26,000 seat Arena, 10,000 homes, 3.5m sq ft of offices, 1m sq f

This complexity arises out of the relationship between all the different public and private interests involved and their often differing objectives and needs. Then there are issues of national interest, such as a wider social, environmental and economic agenda, not to mention the legislation and technicalities surrounding environmental impact assessments. These large projects are establishing principles which will flow down through the planning system and influence projects of all sizes.

The bigger picture is about how to redefine a place so that people want to live, work and visit the area. Planning development in this century is about using land more efficiently than we have done over the last 50 years. We have all learned more about the need to integrate transport and to mix commercial and residential developments successfully creating value. These massive regeneration projects present an enormous challenge and great opportunities.

Our role as lead planning consultants was to work with the team and to help to ensure that all the economic, social and environmental issues at national, regional and local level that are now at the heart of successful major urban regeneration projects in the 21st Century were fully identified and addressed. Following grant of planning permission we have been involved both in advising at a strategic level but also in terms of delivery of this major new urban quarter.
