Client: Historic Royal Palaces, Kensington Palace

We were instructed by our client, Historic Royal Palaces (HRP), to advise on proposals to create greater access to Kensington Palace. The proposals drew on the experience of HRP and were the result of two years of detailed work to bring forward a comprehensive approach to create greater legibility of, and accessibility to, both the historic Royal Park land and Kensington Palace, for the millions of visitors who enter and use the Royal Park each year.

The proposals were developed in response to a number of visual and physical barriers which positively discouraged and prevented ready, easy and inviting visitor access to the Palace. The proposal involved works to the Palace itself as well as new landscaping and tree planting that would allow the opening up of views into the Palace. In addition, a new visitor centre and shop were proposed within the building.

With Scheduled Monument Consent in place from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, we assisted HRP in the final phase of securing planning permission for the proposals from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
