Client: HKS and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

Gerald Eve LLP provided Access Consultancy services for a £135m state of the art development at Salford Royal Hospital, Salford.  We provided professional advice which helped the design team develop inclusive environments in accordance with Building Regulations and in line with Best Practice standards.

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching trust with approximately 850 inpatient beds employing over 4,600 staff and treating in the region of 400,000 patients per year.

The facilities include an education centre, an emergency assessment unit, a critical care unit, a high dependency unit, an intestinal failure unit, new renal, urology units, wards, diagnostic units, mortuary, and other facilities.

As part of the HKS design team, Gerald Eve LLP provided Access Consultancy Services for the scheme.

Approach
Gerald Eve LLP supported and directed HKS in the development of an optimal accessibility strategy for the project.  We provided a Staged Access Statement to deliver Part M Building Regulations Approval. We worked closely with the architectural team providing advice on specific access issues enabling a fully inclusive designed scheme to be achieved. Throughout the process we formed a key part of negotiations with Building Control and took account of local access groups concerns, and concerns of the Trust whilst considering project objectives and requirements so that a balanced approach was taken toward Inclusive Design for the scheme.

Results
Gerald Eve LLP Staged Access Statement was accepted by the Local Authority and Building Regulations Approval was granted enabling a fully accessible hospital building to be delivered by Balfour Beatty Construction, in line with current access legislation and Best Practice Standards.
