Client: Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Knightsbridge

Gerald Eve LLP were instructed by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to achieve planning permission for a number of alterations, extensions and refurbishment works at their hotel in Knightsbridge. Planning permission has been secured for alterations within the west lightwell including double-height extension at first and second floor levels with glazed roof, replacement of fenestration, installation of Juliette balconies, green walls, and risers and separately for improvements to the entrance.

The site is located within the Albert Gate Conservation Area as designated by Westminster City Council, and Mandarin Oriental instructed Gerald Eve LLP to review the draft Conservation Area Audit released for consultation. Gerald Eve LLP made representations on behalf of the client because the hotel was designated as a building where rooftop extensions would not be acceptable. The representations were successful in changing the designation of the hotel to a building which may be suitable for a rooftop extension.

Continuing advice is being given in relation to the proposed rooftop extension, amendments to the permissions and refurbishment works throughout. Key planning issues include views of the proposed development from Hyde Park and the conservation area.
