Client: Imperial College London, South East Quadrant

Synonymous with academic excellence in British Higher Education, Imperial College London competes at the global level for the top students, researchers and lecturers. The College’s main South Kensington campus was developed predominantly in the 1960s and a number of buildings are no longer able to provide the standard of accommodation required of a modern university of international standing.

For Imperial College to maintain its World-renowned reputation in the field of engineering and business and to ensure that it is able to compete on a world stage with other institutions, the College is committed to investing in new facilities and methods of research and teaching and to provide improved international conference facilities.

Gerald Eve LLP was instructed by Imperial College London to provide a planning and consultation strategy for the comprehensive redevelopment of the South East Quadrant (SEQ) of its main campus, to sustain the existence of its world-class engineering faculty and to bring together of the existing Departments of Aeronautical, Civil and Mechanical Engineering and Computing.

Gerald Eve LLP with Arup Project Management, co-ordinated a consultant team to secure planning permission for refurbishment and modernisation works to the Skempton and Mechanical Engineering buildings within the SEQ. As the other buildings within the SEQ (Black Tower and the Annex to Mechanical Engineering) are not suitable for refurbishment it is proposed to demolish these buildings and replace them with a modern 8-storey 15,000 sq m (GIA) building that maximises use of sustainable design and technology and acts as a front door to the campus. The proposed building will complete the western frontage to Exhibition Road and it will be fully integrated with, and mutually supportive of, the pedestrian improvements being made to the road through the Exhibition Road Project, currently being advanced by the City of Westminster in conjunction with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Mayor of London and Transport for London.

Gerald Eve LLP has provided planning advice to the College since the inception of the “New Exhibition Road Building”. We managed an extensive pre-application and public consultation process for the proposals and co-ordinated an extensive project team in the
preparation and submission of application material.
