It's inevitable that in a country as built-up as the UK, most large-scale redevelopments or infrastructure projects involve an element of compulsory purchase. This can take years.

The UK's unique and complicated system of land ownership means that good compulsory purchase surveyors are a rarity. It's highly specialist - and often controversial - work, requiring watertight technical knowledge and impeccable diplomacy.

Our teams are widely acknowledged as way ahead of the field. In fact, we participate on a range of top-level government working parties and other professional groups looking into the compensation code and the case for reform. These include the DETR Compulsory Purchase Policy Review Advisory Group (CPPRAG), on whose work some of the changes introduced by the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 were based, and a working party set up by the Law Commission to consider draft proposals for further legislative change.

We act for both acquiring authorities - such as local government, transport undertakers and utility providers - and those whose property is taken.

We safely steer our clients through the whole process, from purchases by agreement before the CPO is issued, through to making, negotiating and settling compensation claims.
