Continuous care from Gerald Eve boosts Lancashire hospitals’ budgets
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the UK’s largest and highest-performing trusts. Its two main sites, Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, serve 370,000 people in Preston and Chorley.
Gerald Eve have provided the trust with a full rates and appeals consultancy service covering their entire portfolio since the 1995 Revaluation. As part of that service, we reviewed and audited the 2010 business rates valuation list across the estate. Both hospitals had undergone some major changes, and their rates assessments had gone through a series of adjustments.
We were able to make a series of successful appeals against the assessments including material changes of circumstance at both hospitals. The original assessment for Royal Preston was £2.9m; we secured a reduction of £240,000 to £2.66m, which so far – up to Q4, 2015 – has brought savings in the region of £650,000. The total savings to date across the portfolio as a result of our appeals amount to around £1.1m – a valuable sum for any hard-pressed NHS trust – and we continue to lodge appeals as the hospital estates change and evolve.
