Budget 2013: Rating Expert Bemoans Lack of Government Support

Jerry Schurder, Head of Rating at Property Consultants Gerald Eve has bemoaned the Government’s continued lack of support for beleaguered retailers in declining high streets up and down the land.

He said: “Having inexplicably postponed the planned 2015 business rates revaluation which would have brought reduced bills for retailers, the Chancellor continued to sacrifice the declining High Street by refusing to reinstate empty property rates relief or to limit the planned 2.6% increase in rates bills which will add £175m to  retailers’ rates bills in the coming year.

“He claimed the Government was committed to low and competitive taxes, but the business rate stands out as a clear and significant  exception, being the highest local property tax in Europe harming the prospects of businesses dependent upon the occupation of property .”
