Martin is a Partner in the firm’s Glasgow office and has significant experience in the licensed and leisure sector having worked for, and advised, a wide range of national and independent operators on asset management, acquisition & development, valuation, disposals, lettings and rating.
Martin has extensive experience of property and corporate acquisitions and disposals in Scotland and northern England both in an in-house capacity and as external consultant to listed companies such as Mitchells & Butlers, Punch Taverns, Greene King and Rank as well as a variety of independent licensed retailers.
Martin not only advises on acquiring existing businesses and development opportunities but also assists in asset management of surplus assets and has secured alternative use lettings to retail and commercial occupiers with the purpose of retaining for income or for future disposal of investment class properties. Martin also advises clients on the outright disposal of properties including trading entities as going concerns and development sites. In recent times Martin has advised on the disposal of surplus city centre assets for redevelopment on behalf of Rank and Hawthorn Leisure in Edinburgh and Glasgow respectively.
On valuation matters, Martin is a RICS Registered Valuer and has undertaken valuations of a wide variety of leisure subjects including public houses, hotels, restaurants and bingo halls for the purposes of statutory accounts, lending purposes, SIPP regulation and as part of larger UK wide portfolios. Clients include HSBC, Barclays, Clydesdale Bank, Greene King, Rank and Gala. Martin is also certified as a panel member of the Pubs Independent Rent Review Scheme for Scotland.
From a rating perspective, Martin’s breadth of experience extends back to the 1985 Rating Revaluation in Scotland. For the 2010 Revaluation Martin has dealt with appeals in Scotland for a number of retained national clients such as Whitbread, Mitchells & Butlers, Greene King, G1 Group, De Vere, Apex Hotels, Holiday Inn, Marriot and The Restaurant Group. Martin is a leading contributor to national discussions on the 2017 Rating Revaluation, including as advisor to a number of trade and industry bodies such as the Scottish Beer & Pub Association and the British Hospitality Association.
